g’day!

did you know that a world without sunday scaries exists? i would know, because i moved to this world over the last couple of years.

two years ago, i was working in healthcare. overworked, underpaid, anxious, and hating most of it. now, i work remotely in fintech, and i love it. i love the job, the people, the mission, working remotely, and having more time and energy to do stuff like this.

i get a lot of people asking how i made this pretty sharp career pivot, so i’m going to break it down for you into some clean actionable steps you can start thinking about or taking.

  1. read the book ‘work backwards’ by tim duggan. do not skip this step. work out what you want - for me, the rough goal was remote work in an industry i liked, and 6 figures. the remote part was important, because i wanted to live anywhere (a farm), and travel when i want.

  2. base your career around your life, not the other way around. ask yourself what actually matters, how you want to spend your time, and what fills your cup.

  3. keep your life and your finances lean - i actually think this was the whole reason i could make bold moves. taking a risk is near impossible if you’re super leveraged with debt

  4. find your foot in the door. for me, it was content creation for an ecommerce brand. i purchased their product, thought it was cool, and made them some videos for free. i somehow swindled my way into managing their socials for them, then kept snowballing my skills from there. it just takes one person to believe in you!

  5. understand that career pivots may involve some unpaid work, an initial pay cut, and swallowing your pride at times. that’s okay - just make sure that every decision you make is moving you towards your goal.

  6. keep going, rinse and repeat. keep your goal front and centre, keep building your skillset and your network, and move quickly. it’s okay to change jobs during a career pivot - take your experience and new skillset and go (if you’re not able to keep growing with that company).

i don’t really buy into the whole ‘do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life’ bs, because every job has parts of it that suck, and there are good and bad days. but if you can find one with more good days, i think that’s a win :)

p.s. i made a youtube video on how i pivoted from healthcare to tech, as well as the type of jobs you can get into, & where to find them

‘till next time,

larissa x
